Early Development and School Readiness
Early Years Developmental Screening
Our early years developmental screening helps identify possible developmental concerns during the years when early support can make the greatest difference.
The screening provides families and educators with practical guidance to support each child’s confidence, independence, learning and development.
Who Is This Service For?
This service is designed for childcare centres and kindergartens that want to:
- Better understand children’s development
- Identify possible concerns early
- Assess school readiness
- Receive practical strategies for the learning environment
- Guide families towards further support when needed
How the Screening Works
Before the Screening
Parents receive an information pack and screening forms explaining the process and providing an opportunity to share any developmental concerns.
The childcare centre or kindergarten will also receive a short screening form to complete.
During the Screening
An occupational therapist observes each child in their usual childcare or kindergarten environment.
A therapist can observe up to five children per hour, allowing approximately 15 minutes per child. Larger groups can be accommodated by extending the session or arranging an additional therapist.
Areas We Observe
The screening considers areas including:
- Social and emotional development
- Sensory responses
- Fine and gross motor skills
- Awareness of body signals
- Play and learning skills
- Adaptability within the environment
After the Screening
Each family receives a brief written summary outlining the therapist’s observations and any recommended next steps.
With parental consent, a copy can also be provided to the childcare centre or kindergarten.
Availability
Developmental screening sessions are currently available on Wednesdays. We welcome enquiries from childcare centres and kindergartens interested in participating.
Pricing
The total cost is $581.97, which includes:
- A 1.5-hour observation session for up to five children
- 1.5 hours to prepare written summaries
When shared between five families, the cost is $116.39 per child.
Where Kindy Uplift funding is available, the service may be provided at no cost to families.
Important Information
This service is a general screening of developmental milestones and school readiness. It is not a formal diagnostic assessment.
